Happily-Ever-After,
Maybe-After or Never-After?
Most romance novels have the requisite
happily-ever-after, although there are many romance readers who are also fine
with a happy-for-now. They can handle ‘maybe’ for their MC’s. Rarely seen in
romance, and almost universally frowned upon is the never-after. I can’t
imagine the point in reading a romance where the couple — or threesome,
foursome, etc. — don’t form some sort of a committed bond by the end. That
sucks. I see enough of that in real life — I don’t need to pay for it.
Okay, okay. I’ll calm down. Sometimes I want to read
something filled with more drama and angst — I do like some oomph to my story —
but…they still have to fall in love and be together at the end. Sorry, I can’t
get away from it. There’s other fiction I adore where there isn’t a hint of
love in the air. There’s non-fiction I read that is filled with gruesome true
crime details. Those typically involve more hate than love. But when I read
romance — it needs to actually have romance.
If the author has written something engaging enough
that I become invested in the character’s lives, I don’t want to have the rug
pulled out from under me at the end. They can struggle and hate and fight and
misunderstand (not cheat…nonononono) to their heart’s content, as long as they
are safely ensconced in one another’s arms after it’s all over. That’s a
romance novel.
On a final note, I write romance novels and stories.
Bearing that in mind, I will give you a permanent spoiler to every book ending
Morticia Knight will ever write. Here’s the gist of it: “…and they lived happily ever after.”
