INTERESTING PEOPLE INTERVIEW
Meet: Zathyn Priest

What are your 2 favorite careers?

Right now, my favorite is burlesque dancing.  Something I’m dedicating a fair bit of my time to making a part-time career out of.  I’ve got myself physically fit over the past year, gone back to dance lessons, and am taking it seriously.  It’s something I’ve wanted to do for a long, long time and finally I decided to stop dreaming about it and make it happen.
The other would have to be writing, because it challenges me on many levels.  Emotionally, intellectually, and creatively.  Whenever I feel like I can’t do it anymore, the writing muse never lets me escape.  For that I’m glad.  I know I’d be lost without writing as an avenue to express myself.

What are some of your other favorite activities?

I get bored quickly with TV and movies, but can watch makeup tutorials for hours on YouTube.  I’m a cosmetic junkie.  Can’t get enough of the stuff, or get enough of learning new ways to apply it.  Skincare is another passion.  Anything in the cosmetic industry grabs my attention and I love learning about it.
I’m almost embarrassed to say that my other favorite activity is window shopping on eBay.  Finding inexpensive clothes, even if I don’t buy them, is an addiction.  So is shopping in secondhand stores.  I rarely pay full price for anything.  Partly because I’m cheap like that, and partly because the hunt for a bargain is most of the thrill.

What is the hardest thing you ever had to do?

Cope after the suicide of my partner.  It’s one of those devastating things you put in the ‘It could never happen to me’ box. It affected me, and my life, in so many ways.  When he died, a part of me died with him.  It sounds cliché, yet that’s exactly what happened.

Favorite music, song or band

I don’t have a favorite band, and favorite song tends to change daily.  My music taste is eclectic.  At the moment I’m drawn to vintage, fusion belly dance, and pop music that I can use for boylesque/burlesque. It’s been interesting because a lot of it is stuff that I wouldn’t necessarily have listened to before, but really like now I’ve found it.

Are you usually late, early or right on time?

One of my pet peeves is when others run late, or when I’m forced to wait for an appointment.  Therefore, I tend to be one of those people who make sure I’m running early.  And if, for some reason, I am going to be late, I make sure I let them know. Having said that, I’m not one of those people that turn up half an hour early at someone’s house, because that’s just as annoying as turning up half an hour late.

Are you happy with your life for the most part right now?

I’m excited about new plans for my life and a new career path.  I’ve had my stint as a full-time writer and it didn’t work out.  To keep writing and producing books, I have to do something else.  Something outside of this office and more social.  Writing has become far too isolating for me.  I can never quit writing, as its part of my soul. There have been many times when I have wanted to quit, and I’ve realized that’s because there are other things I need/want to do.  Now, I’m in a place in my life where I’m confident enough in myself to follow other dreams.  Even if a boylesque career doesn’t work out, at least I’ll have no regrets about not trying.

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go?

Prague.  There’s a character in one of my short stories, Lewis, who is obsessed with Prague.  He got that from me.  Although, I’m not quite as obsessed as he is!  One day, when I win the lottery – difficult seeing as I don’t play lottery – I’ll tick Prague off my bucket list.  I love countries and cities with historical architecture.
I’d also love to tour through Europe and see castles, ruins, and cathedrals.  Monet’s Garden is also on my list of places to see.

What do you think would be the hardest venture for you to give up on?

Apparently it’s writing!  I’ve been through burnout and severe writer’s block, I’ve thought about quitting, and yet I’m still here.  In the end, I’m a storyteller, and I can’t give it up.  I love it, even if it feels like it doesn’t love me back sometimes.  Though, I do admit, I’m my own enemy in pretty much everything I do.  My own worst critic and I have a brain that focuses for about 5 minutes before…. Oh… look… bargains on eBay!!
