Do you write in more than one genre?
I write mostly paranormal fiction, although I’ve also written epic fantasy, and I have a story coming out soon that crosses the line into Science Fiction Romance, with a Paranormal twist.

What if any, is the hardest part of writing for you?
I love writing, so I had to think about this one. I guess the hardest part is getting into the story. I think all writers tend to wander a bit at the beginning until they get a good sense of their characters and can move into the heart of the tale.

What inspired the story?
UNFORGIVEN is a Cyn & Raphael novella within my Vampires in America series of Paranormal Romance. Cyn and Raphael were the first two characters introduced in the series, and the only two who appear in every book, even if it’s only off-stage. My readers loved Cyn and Raphael and wanted more. I didn’t want to sacrifice the new characters, so I started writing these novellas which bridge the gap between books.

ALLEGIANCE . . . the ties that bind. Friendship, duty, blood.
TREACHERY . . . when friendship is abused, duty turns to burden, and blood is not enough.
UNFORGIVEN . . . because there are some things that can never be forgotten.

EXCERPT:
War is imminent, and a spy has infiltrated Raphael’s estate. But his target is not Raphael; it’s his sister, Alexandra, whose earlier duplicity nearly cost Cyn her life. Raphael and Cyn are determined to play the spy’s game, traveling to Mexico to discover who their enemy is and just how far he’ll go to win. But once Raphael finds his sister, can he take the chance that she won’t betray him again?

A Merman in Miami by Amy Armstrong

Thanks so much to Literary Nymphs for having me as a guest on your blog. I’m so happy to be here!

I’ve always loved anything to do with the supernatural and as a fan of paranormal erotic romance; I’m fascinated by the many different paranormal beings that authors chose to write about. I enjoy learning about the mythology behind these creatures and I love how each author brings something different when writing about them. A vampire can be the charming lead protagonist or the villain of the story and the heroine can be every bit as strong as the hero. Gone are the days in which a heroine is simpering and weak and needs a man to rescue her. When I began writing the first book in my Huntress Chronicles series, I wanted the story to be the opposite of that old gender stereotype. I wanted my heroine to be the saviour and to do the exact same job as the hero.

I intended the first book to be a standalone novel, but half way through writing it, I realised there was too much story for one book. I felt that the premise of vampire hunters searching for lost grimoires before they fell into the hands of demons would work well as a longer body of work. I thought about how I could expand upon my original idea and as I wanted to write about more than just vampires and shifters it occurred to me that each book could focus on a different paranormal being.

The titles of the books speak for themselves. In the first book A Demon in Dallas, Raven’s search for a demon dominates the story. In the second, A Fae in Fort Worth we visit a Fae sanctuary and in the third book A Merman in Miami I decided to explore merpeople and their wonderful underwater realm.

In A Merman in Miami, Mia has been in love with her hunting partner Drew for nearly ten years. Convinced he doesn’t love her back, she decides to leave him and to find a new partner, but before she makes the call to the hunters’ council to ask for a replacement, she’s tasked with finding one of the lost grimoires. Mia takes the job so that she can spend a few more days with Drew, but she doesn’t realise that the job which will bring her into contact with the very secretive merpeople will be her most challenging and might just cost her and Drew their lives. When they visit the merpeople’s underwater realm, Mia is pursued by the merpeople’s king and as she believes there is no hope for her and Drew, she begins to warm to the king’s advances, but as their mission progresses she realises Drew might not be as far out of her reach as she had imagined.

Thanks so much for taking the time to learn more about me and my books. I hope you’ll enjoy this short excerpt of the book.

Excerpt from A Merman in Miami:

Drew massaged his temple. “Did the mermaid just leave us alone in his house?”

“Merman,” I corrected. “I guess grief will make you do crazy things like that.”

“How are we going to get the book now?”

“It looks like we’re going to have to convince the king to give it to us,” I replied.

“But he’s in the underwater realm.”

“Exactly.”

“And how are we going to get there, Mia?” Drew groaned. “I hate water. I knew this job was going to suck the minute we met that damn angel.”

He closed his eyes and continued to massage his temple. Whatever he was thinking, it wouldn’t be good. Drew had been afraid of water long before we’d met. The fear stemmed from a near-drowning experience he’d had as a kid, and he’d never gotten over it or learned to confront his fear. He looked so lost that I couldn’t resist putting my hand on his shoulder to comfort him. I wish I could say that my reasons had been entirely selfless but that would be a lie. Touching him, even in such an impersonal way, always made my heart skip a beat and caused a thrum of electricity to snake its way down my spine.

“Hey. It’s gonna be fine,” I soothed. “We’ll get through it together, okay?”

He stared at me for a long moment and the look was so raw and so intense that I felt my pulse spike. He leaned in close, and I thought for one wild, crazy moment he was going to kiss me, but, of course, he didn’t. Instead, he squeezed my cheek as if I was a damn baby.

“You’re a good friend, Mia, you know that, right? What would I do without you?”

I should have told him right then and there that he’d have to find a way to cope without me. I should have told him I intended to leave and that he’d have to get used to a new partner. I didn’t. I wanted to say it, but I didn’t have the heart to drop a bomb of that magnitude on him when he was already feeling so vulnerable.

Blurb for A Merman in Miami:
Mia Harding has been hunting vampires since she was sixteen years old—almost as long as she’s been in love with her overzealous hunting partner Drew Caine. Unfortunately, the only thing Drew seems passionate about is his job. Tired of longing for someone she can’t have, Mia makes the heart-breaking decision to find a new partner and cut all ties to Drew. But before she can make the request to the council, Mia and Drew are sent to Miami to retrieve one of the lost grimoires. Mia is determined to make it their last mission together—but first they have to survive it.

Drawn to the dark magic of the book, vampires and warlocks begin congregating in the city adding extra pressure to an already difficult mission. When the marine biologist thought to be in possession of the book turns up dead, the trail leads to the highly secretive merpeople. Entering their underwater realm will be problematic, but getting back out will be nearly impossible, especially when the merman king decides he wants Mia as his queen. Lonely and unhappy, Mia at first warms to the advances and the magnetic allure of the king, but maybe Drew isn’t as far out of her reach as she has always believed.

Author Bio:
Mia Kerick is the mother of four exceptional children—all named after saints—and five non-pedigreed cats—all named after the next best thing to saints, Boston Red Sox players. Her husband of twenty years has been told by many that he has the patience of Job, but don’t ask Mia about that, as it is a sensitive subject.

Mia focuses her stories on the emotional growth of troubled young men and their relationships, and she believes that sex has a place in a love story, but not until it is firmly established as a love story. As a teen, Mia filled spiral-bound notebooks with romantic tales of tortured heroes (most of whom happened to strongly resemble lead vocalists of 1980s big-hair bands) and stuffed them under her mattress for safekeeping. She is thankful to Dreamspinner Press for providing her with an alternate place to stash her stories.

Mia is proud of her involvement with the Human Rights Campaign and cheers for each and every victory made in the name of marital equality. Her only major regret: never having taken typing or computer class in school, destining her to a life consumed with two-fingered pecking and constant prayer to the Gods of Technology.

Mia has published four works of adult contemporary gay romantic fiction with Dreamspinner Press and four novels of contemporary LGBT fiction with Harmony Ink Press. Mia Kerick's books are recommended reads in the LGBT blogging/reading community, have spent many weeks on Amazon Hot New Releases and LGBT Best Sellers lists, as well as other notable bestseller lists, and have won awards for excellence in YA literature. Mist Unveiled by Nancy Corrigan

Title: Mist Unveiled, Elemental Desire 1
Author: Nancy Corrigan
Genre: M/F Paranormal

Blurb:
Elemental Desire, Book 1
Cat has one love in her life—science. Facts rule her, not passion. At least it doesn’t until an unknown deadly virus claims her sister’s life. Cat’s quest for answers takes her to Greenland and drops her into the arms of the one man who sways her devotion from logic to passion. Rune stirs her lusts, ignites her desires and fuels her carnal cravings, but he isn’t simply a lover, nor is he human. He’s a weapon, one that has the potential to save or destroy her.

Rune, a child of the mist, awakens into a world hovering on the verge of destruction. Rising temperatures have released his enemies from their frozen prison without his knowledge. He searches for them but finds Cat, a human with the power to save him and the world. He hungers for her—blood, body and soul. Every moment of shared passion convinces him of the truth—she’s his greatest treasure, one he’ll die to keep.

Excerpt:
“Who was the male you were talking to?”

“Sam. He’s—”

“Is he your lover?”

She frowned. The carefully articulated words didn’t give away the reason behind the question. Not seeing any reason to lie, she answered. “Sometimes. We’re not serious.”
He buried his face in the crook of her neck. For a long moment, he only breathed slowly. Each exhale heated her body.

“You won’t touch him again.” He pressed his lips to her ear. “I won’t share you.”

The stark possessiveness in his voice and words should’ve made her see red. It didn’t. Confusion over why he’d care after he’d walked out on her surfaced instead.

“Share me? What are you talking about?”

“Your body, Cat.” He kissed her, right below her ear. Another shiver raced down her spine. Desire fueled it. She was no longer cold. “And your heart, your life, your future. They’re mine.”

Oh. Dear. God.
Arousal flowed with his low gravely declaration. Every inch of her body tingled, desperate for his touch.

Hello? Modern woman here. The alpha male attitude should not push me into a state of instant desire. It did, though. She didn’t want to ponder what that said about her.

“Don’t I get a say in this?”

He clamped his mouth over her neck and nibbled. His teeth scraped her. A groaned sigh escaped him. He eased back so only his lips brushed her skin.

“Oh, yes. You get the final say. I will never take anything from you that you don’t willingly give.” He slid his hand over her lower belly. At her waistband, he popped the button and tugged the zipper. “And you offered to feed me.”

Wyatt's Guilt by Sara Daniel

Title: Wyatt's Guilt
Author: Sara Daniel
Publisher: Musa Publishing
Imprint: Finally Ever After
Release Date: 12/07/2012
Genres: M/F, Contemporary Romance Series

Blurb:
Nicole DeMonde’s car breaks down the moment she returns to her hometown for her brother’s wedding. The cop who stops to help her is none other than local hottie Wyatt Truman, who slept with her, then dumped her when they were teens. She has no choice but to accept his help. However, she knows better than to trust him with her heart twice.

Wyatt is determined to earn Nicole’s forgiveness and make amends for his callous past. Once he lays eyes on her, he can’t help wanting a lot more than forgiveness, despite his intention never to hurt her again.

Just as Wyatt starts thinking his best intentions are of the forever variety, Nicole decides to work Wyatt out of her system with a one night stand. Can either of them make peace with the past in a single weekend, let alone survive with their hearts intact?

Excerpt:
Wyatt touched Nicole’s arm, trying not to notice her warmth and the electric tingle that shot up his fingertips. “Can I talk to you privately?”

She aimed her blue eyes straight at him. Her gaze proved she knew exactly what he was thinking. “Everything is fine, Wyatt. I never told anyone, and I’m not going to start now. The only person who might have guessed was my mother.”

“I’m sorry about your mother.” He closed his eyes briefly, relieved she had no intention of ruining Julianne’s wedding, embarrassed that the possibility of her doing so even crossed his mind. Nicole had proven she could move beyond the past. For him to do so, he had to start with an apology, preferably where no one in their party would overhear. “Please, come with me.”

He guided her through the backdoor of the restaurant. Stepping to the side of the building, he turned to face her. He should have let go of her arm, but somehow speaking came easier while touching her. “I should have apologized first thing when I saw you this afternoon, but meeting over your car troubles caught me off-guard.”

“You don’t need to apologize. I’m over it.”

He shook his head. She might be willing to let him off easy, but he wasn’t ready to forgive himself. “You still deserve a formal apology. I am sorry, very sorry. I treated you horribly fifteen years ago. You have every right to cut off my balls in front of our families.”

Her gaze shot down to his crotch and back up. “You’re the first guy I’ve met who’s been willing to put his testicles on the chopping block for any reason. As I recall, you treated me fine and gave me exactly what I asked for. Of course, I was so smitten that I took it pretty hard when you decided you’d had enough of me.”

Great, He’d delivered his big apology, and now he felt worse than ever. It would have been easier if she’d vowed never to forgive him. She’d been “smitten”? No apology was strong enough. And yet knowing she’d felt more for him than pure lust warmed his lonely soul.
“The point is I wanted you,” Nicole argued, her shiny black hair swaying emphatically with her words. “I threw myself at you and gave as good as I got.”

She didn’t deserve any of the blame. He refused to allow her to share what he alone was responsible for. “You’re not getting it. I planned to hurt you, and I did.”

“I got my heart broken by following it and making stupid choices. It happens. I grew up. I got over it.” She leaned so close to him that he could see violet flecks in her round blue eyes.

“What I can’t understand, Wyatt, is why you didn’t.”

Being True by Jacob Z. Flores
Publisher: Dreamspinner
Genre: M/M Romance
Release Date: September 16, 2014

Truman L. Cobbler has not had an easy life. It’s bad enough people say he looks like Donkey from Shrek, but he’s also suffered the death of his policeman father and his mother’s remarriage to a professional swindler, who cost them everything. Now dirt poor, they live in the barrio of San Antonio, Texas. When Tru transfers to an inner-city high school halfway through his senior year, he meets Javi Castillo, a popular and hot high school jock.

Javi takes an immediate liking to Tru, and the two become friends. The odd pairing, however, rocks the school and sets the cliquish social circles askew. No one knows how to act or what to think when Mr. Popular takes a stand for Mr. Donkey. Will the cliques rise up to maintain status quo and lead Tru and Javi to heartbreak and disaster or will being true to who they are rule the day?

Excerpt
Much to my surprise, most of my day had gone pretty much without incident and played out how my first days at a new school usually did. I ate lunch by myself in the outside quad on a bench far away from everyone else. I shuffled from one class to the next, where I was either scowled at or ignored. Most of the negativity came from the Jock Brigade and Mr. Badass, who had been in every class I had except physics and English.

Who exactly had I pissed off in an earlier life to be that unlucky?

I tried my best to be as invisible as possible, to lessen the serious hate-on they’d had for me since precalc. I didn’t answer questions when called on. I didn’t talk to other students. Hell, I didn’t get up to go to the restroom even though I’d had to pee since fourth-period US History.

My efforts had all been in vain.

Nothing seemed to stop the relentless piercing stare Mr. Badass shot at me every minute of every class, or every time we passed each other in the hall. My standard demeanor of head down and averted eyes hadn’t done its usual trick.

It only seemed to infuriate him more.

By the time sixth period rolled around, which was the only class I had actually looked forward to, I had become a bundle of nervous energy. The hairs on the back of my neck refused to go down, and I was about ready to jump out of my skin.

Only thinking about Javi Castillo settled my nerves.

Whenever I wanted to bolt from the classroom, I’d remember how warmly he greeted me. The memory of his friendly gaze and electric touch kept me from the agitated twitches that occasionally took control of my body in times of high stress.

The only negative side effect had been the never-ending wood I had to conceal.
My attraction to Javi wasn’t a big revelation that I was gay or anything. Hell, I’d known I liked boys since Carl Delacruz kissed me in second grade. After that, it was pretty clear where my preference lay. Besides, it wasn’t like I was a typical boy who ran like a battering ram through life.

I was always more delicate. More sensitive.

My parents had always suspected I was gay. At least that was what my mom told me when I came out to her a couple of years ago. She hadn’t been surprised, and she didn’t really care either. She said my father had asked her if I might be gay when I was, like, four or five. And when I say father, I mean Alexander Cobbler, my real dad, not the jerkhole, Bart.

Apparently, I used to put string on my head and pretend I was a girl with long hair. And I’d begged for a tea set and an Easy-Bake Oven one Christmas. My dad had been taken aback by it, but according to Mom, it hadn’t mattered. I was his son.

Somehow, knowing that, knowing I had my parents’ support—even my dad’s from the great beyond—made being who I was a lot easier to bear.

Creature Feature 2 by Rhys Ford and Poppy Dennison

Title: Creature Feature 2
Authors: Rhys Ford and Poppy Dennison
Publisher: Dreamspinner Press
Genre: Paranormal Anthology

First off, I want to thank Literary Nymphs Hotlist for allowing me and Poppy to have space here today. Much much thanks. When the time came to divide up blog posts—best part of a tour like this, dividing up the work— I got tagged for some interesting topics. In this case, I was asked about the source of building a creature profile.

This kind of stumped me. I’ll be honest. Totally stumped me because I don’t really think about it so much as it happens kind of organically. Especially in the instance of Creature Feature 2. Because Poppy and I were going to share monsters, they had to be something simplistic enough to have common features yet complicated enough for us to project a tinge of individuality on. Basically, we had to differentiate which creature was which because it just couldn’t be Monster 1a and 2b.

We chose vampires but not a traditional Stoker-inspired monster. That would be too human for our purposes and we didn’t want to go zombie—no one likes a monster dropping its bits off every which way. So we eventually hammered out the details of people who’d basically sold their souls to a blood mage. Or they were taken. He wasn’t a nice guy. He probably didn’t ask people to sign off on disclosure forms or any of that. But suddenly there was a blood mage named Mac Gerailt who really was the monster in the story not because of his presence but rather the aftermath of his actions. The creatures he created were stripped of their humanity and became tools for his thirst for power. Enter a good mage who battled to the death to stop him and suddenly, we had a time capsule of ravenous, soulless hunters itching to get out and feed on their own species.

Poppy and I both balanced our monstrosities with a bit of humor and a lot of sexual tensions as our hunters are called in to eradicate this threat. Her Taz goes one way and my Javi goes another—both with vital missions and perhaps neither looking for love and companionship.
Oddly enough, they each found both.
As well as a hell of a lot of horrific creatures and action along the way.
So we hope you enjoy our foray into the Creature side of things and wish you have as much fun reading the book as we did writing it.

A short excerpt
From what the construction guy said over the phone, Javi was prepared for a kill site like no other but nothing could have prepared him for what they walked in on. The stench of vampyre clung to the walls and beside him, Taz Cohen took everything in, drinking up the deconstructed walls. The man’s breadth was impressive, thick arms and thighs honed from hard work. A flood light dangling from a support beam swung slowly on its long cord, catching on the blond hunter’s shoulder as they went by.
“Shit, you can smell them. It’s like rotten death.” Taz whistled under his breath. “Damn. It’s like gross central. Where’s the kill spot? In the kitchen?”

“Nah, looked like this place used to have a back room during Prohibition. The owners wanted to make it this cool hip speakeasy thing,” Javi motioned to a bookcase swung away from a long wall. The gap let them see a peek of the dingy room hidden behind the hinged furniture. “Would have worked too—”

“If it wasn’t for those pesky meddling ticks,” Taz flashed him a smile, his young handsome face warming with humor. From the wrinkle on the guy’s nose, Javi guessed the hunter figured out where the smell was coming from. Pointing to the bookcase, he quirked up one eyebrow. “In there then?”
“Yeah, in there.” Javi took a deep breath. “Let’s gird our loins and all that shit.

The bookcase moved easily and the putrid rank grew stronger. They both gagged, choking on the roil of stench coming from a fissure in the floor. Barely a foot and a half wide, the steep of a vampyre lair was only tempered by one thing—the ocean of dried blood covering most of the speakeasy’s cracked floor.

“Holy crap,” Taz sounded as shocked as Javi felt. “How…do they know how many?”

“Haven’t gotten a clue. Someone’s going to over the tapes but—” Javi shrugged. “I’m more worried about how strong they are. And if we can take them out. More than one, that’s for sure. Hell, how many could have been down there?”

It took them a good fifteen minutes to break through the floor. Given the carnage and the cops’ reluctance to cross the threshold, they tried to be careful, not wanting to disturb the vampyres’ lair. Once the fissure was wide enough for both of them to look down into the cavern, Javi dropped in one of the crew’s shock-resistant lanterns and they poked their heads in, Javi’s shotgun at the ready in case of a surprise attack.

The room was empty of revenants but the dusky husks of extinguished vampyres littered the floor and a messy scatter of bones lay on top of the remains, their long shanks broken apart and gnawed on as if something sucked out the marrow from within.

“Hell,” Taz whispered, pointing at the skulls lying a few feet apart of each other. “Who the fuck do you suppose those guys were?”

“Mages,” Javi replied. “Look on the ground. Well, where you can see the floor. Those are casting runes—death magic. Holy shit, Detroit. A speakeasy. That’s what? A hundred years, maybe less?”

“Yeah,” Taz agreed. “About that. Why?”

“Two men.” It was a shock. Something Javi never thought someone would find in his lifetime much less be the one to have cracked through the floor and stare down into a historic event most hunters whispered about discovering over too many beers and longing. “Mages, probably both of them. Fuck, Cohen. Do you know what we’ve found?”

“No fucking clue, man. That’s why I asked you.” The hunter snorted. “I’m the werewolf guy. Vampyres and mages haven’t been on my radar much.”

“It’s like the Holy Grail and the Arc of the Covenant for hunters, man. Or maybe Amelia Earhart.”

Javi exhaled hard, his heart pounding with excitement. “I think we’ve found their last battle. Shit, it all adds up. Two bodies, vampyres and look over there! That’s a staff and I bet you its rowan. Something a life mage would carry. Dude, this has got to be it.”

“You want to let me in on the joke here, Indy?” Taz poked at Javi’s side. “I’ve got no clue what you’re talking about.

Mijo, we have found the mother lode. The final battlegrounds of two of the most powerful mages of their generation—Pierce Chapman and The Mac Gerailt.”

Two Men. One Apocalypse.

Rise of the Revenants by Poppy Dennison
Vampyres are on the loose in Detroit, and novice hunter Taz Cohen is on the job. The mission seems simple: stop the vamps. But Taz knows nothing about the mythical creatures, so he’s in for the fight of his life. Then he meets insanely attractive construction worker Darren Foster, who jumps into the battle with both feet. Sparks and bullets fly as they struggle against the vampyre horde and their attraction to each other. Avoiding gruesome death from the undead might be easier than shielding their hearts from each other.

Legacy of Blood and Death by Rhys Ford
For Javi Navarro, Detroit will become another blood-splattered city in his rearview mirror after he puts its dead back into the ground. Expecting an easy hunting job, Javi instead finds a kiss of ancient vampyres on the hunt for a descendant of their long-dead creator.
Reclusive Ciarnan Mac Gerailt abandoned his family legacy of blood and death magic after it nearly destroyed him. Unfortunately for Ciarnan, the Motor City can only be saved if he resumes his dark arts and joins forces with Javi Navarro, the hunter who brought the vampyre apocalypse—and hope for the future—straight to Ciarnan’s front door.

Poppy Dennison
A sassy southern lady, Poppy Dennison developed an obsession with things that go bump in the night in her early years after a barn door flew off its hinges and nearly squashed her. Convinced it was a ghost trying to get her attention, she started looking for other strange and mysterious happenings around her. Not satisfied with what she found, Poppy has traveled to Greece, Malaysia and England to find inspiration for the burly bears and silver foxes that melt her butter. Her love of paranormal continues to flourish nearly thirty years later, and she writes steamy love stories about the very things that used to keep her up all night. If her childhood ghost is lucky, maybe one day she’ll give him his own happily ever after.
