BRETON WOLFE by VICTORIA VANE

BRETON WOLFE by VICTORIA VANE (A De Wolfe Pack Kindle worlds novella)

She swore to defy him to her dying breath... But passion blurs the line between love and hate...
The bluest blood and the hardest heart... at least when it comes to marriage... The daughter of a duke and granddaughter of a king, Adele of Vannes was bartered at birth in a marriage treaty for the sole purpose of producing a royal heir. When her philandering husband is slain by Norse marauders, she is coerced to wed again in order to protect her home and her people. Adele knows that her beloved Brittany needs a strong hand to survive, but how can she ever reconcile her bitterness and hatred with the desire she feels for her mortal enemy?
She’s the jewel he seeks for his Breton crown...A Barbarian bent on building a dynasty, Valdrik Vargr, ‘the Norse Wolf,’ is renowned for both his bravery in battle and shrewdness in statecraft. Setting his sights on claiming the kingdom of Brittany, he knows that siring sons from royal blood would solidify his hold, but the woman he would claim as his queen refuses to have him. Will he fuel her hatred by taking her to his bed, or will the man who strikes terror in the hearts of men be reduced to wooing his bride?

Adèle spent the night on her knees in prayer, gaze cast heavenward in supplication. She hadn’t dared to bow her head and shut her eyes for fear that sleep would overtake her. She couldn’t afford to be caught aware when the marauders came. And they would come. That was a certainty. Rudalt had never returned from his ‘Norse” hunt. None of them had returned. They were dead. She felt it down to her bones.

She’d dispatched riders to Cournailles but he was days away. He would never arrive in time. Her home would be burned to ashes before help ever came. Perhaps she could buy them off? Did she have enough silver and jewels to pay tribute? Or would the Norsemen simply extract their payment in woman’s flesh and men’s blood?

Her throat thickened at the sudden remembrance of her wedding night. She had borne Rudalt’s ravaging for years; surely she could survive it again. And survival was all she dared hope for. The Norse would come with their battle axes and siege machines. The Bretons might keep them at bay for a few hours or maybe a day, but penetration of their walls was inevitable. She had no true defenses outside of a few dozen archers. In his arrogance, Rudalt had taken the best warriors, leaving her defenseless.

From her bedchamber window, Adèle cast her gaze eastward where the sun was rising, painting the landscape of rolling hills in soft shades of pink and gold. She stared off into the distance, chewing her lip and willing her nerves to settle. Last night she’d worn holes in her slippers and bitten her fingernails to the quick. She now accepted that her fate was out of her hands. She had no choice but to entrust herself to the merciful will of God. If death awaited her, she prayed it would be swift.

Moving shadows appeared on the horizon. A moment later they took shape as a solid line of men. Hundreds of mounted men. But rather than shrinking in terror, a strange peace settled over her. She was the daughter of Judicael, a great warrior and Duke of Brittany. Her great-grandfather was Erispoe, the first proclaimed King of the Bretons. She would do as the father and grandfather had done before her—she would fight them to her dying breath.

Book Blurb

Join the wild ride in this vibrant and fun first installment of the new romantic comedy serial by best-selling author Leta Blake and newcomer Alice Griffiths!

After a drunken night of hot sex in Vegas, strangers Will Patterson and Dr. Patrick McCloud wake up married. A quickie divorce is the most obvious way out—unless you’re the heir of a staunchly Catholic mafia boss with a draconian position on the sanctity of marriage.

Stuck between a rock and a hard place, Will and Patrick don't like it, or each other, but they have to make the best of it until they can find another way out of their marriage. To ensure the trust fund Will's charitable foundation relies on isn't revoked by his mobster grandfather, he and Patrick travel to Will’s hometown of Healing, South Dakota, posing as a newlywed couple in the throes of true love at first sight.

Complicating their scheme are Will’s unresolved feelings for his all-too-recent ex-boyfriend Ryan, and Patrick’s desire to get back to the only thing that really matters to him in life: neurosurgery. Will they fool everyone? Or will the mafia get wind that their marriage is a fake? Throw their simmering attraction into the mix and all bets are off!

Episode 1 of 6 in the Wake Up Married Serial.

Excerpt
Patrick sits down beside Will and rubs his hands together in anticipation. “So, what did Granny say? Can she free me from the shackles of our loveless union?”

Will puts his head in his hands. “It’s not going to be as easy as I hoped initially. It might take some time.”

“We knew that. How much time? A week? Two?”

“Maybe a month?”

“What?” Patrick’s voice is loud.

“Maybe more than a month? Possibly up to a year?”

Patrick’s eyes grow dark with anger. "Don’t tell me the all-powerful Eleanora Molinaro you were going on about so enthusiastically when you were convincing me of this half-baked scheme can’t make a little inadvertent marriage disappear.”

“Could you hold it down?” Will whispers. "Or do you want someone to hear?”

“Oooh, right, the Molinaro spies. Might have the place bugged. Guess I shouldn’t yell then? I’m not your toy, Will. I want a divorce and I want one now,” Patrick hollers.

Will glares at him. He raises his own voice, saying, “Don’t be so dramatic, baby!”

He stares Patrick down, daring him to say something else. "You know I love you more than life!”

Patrick looks daggers at him. "Who do you think you’re fooling, Will? The bellhops? The maids?” He wipes a hand across his face and rises. "You know, no. I can’t believe I’ve let your paranoia and insanity drag me across the country into this hornet’s nest of absurdity and—”

Patrick rants on, but Will’s not paying attention anymore, because Patrick’s tossing his new clothes onto the bed, and getting out his suitcases.

“Wait,” Will says, putting his hands on Patrick’s arms. "Wait, don’t.”

Patrick throws a shirt into the bag and sighs. "What do you want from me? I gave your plan a chance, but there is no way in hell I’m going to hang around this town for a year. Not when I could be at the Mayo Clinic or Cedars-Sinai or Vandy. Not when I can be honing my skills and expanding my practice. I am not small-town material, Will. I’m the big-time. I have absolutely no desire to play your loving spouse indefinitely and if
your grandmother can’t get us out of this mess? Well, I sure as hell can.”

“Look,” Will says. "I know you can. I just need you...no, no, stop that. You’re not going anywhere.” Will pushes Patrick, trying to move him away from the bags.

Patrick lurches toward him, gripping his forearms and shoving him back with surprising strength. "I’ve been pushed around enough in my life, Will. Now, if you’ll excuse me. I’m going to take care of this my way.”

Will breathes in hard. Terror and attraction jolts through him at once. He swallows and backs away from Patrick, his hands shaking, and his throat dry. Blood rushes in his ears.

Patrick picks up his bag and heads for the door. Will tries to block Patrick from getting it open.

“Really? It’s come to this? Holding me against my will?”

Will pushes the barely open door shut with a hard slam. “I don’t know what you’re talking about, Patrick. This is just our first lover’s spat. That’s all. The first of many to come in our long, wonderfully happy marriage.”

Patrick stares at him like he’s kind of impressed by this level of insanity. “Good God, you’re drinking your own Kool-Aid.”

“Yeah, well, it’s a very, very expensive drink.”

“You think you’re so clever don’t you?”

Will shrugs. "I think I don’t know what else to do.”

Blurb:
Tim Walker is a free man. He’s broken up with his girlfriend and is ready to move on to a new relationship. But the relationship he wants to pursue is fraught with challenges. Firstly, Scott Richardson is a man, and only Tim’s closest friends know Tim’s bisexual. Secondly, everyone knows Scott relishes the single life. And then there’s the big one: Scott is the younger brother of Tim’s best friend, Paul.

Scott can’t deny an attraction to his brother’s friend Tim. Lean, dark-blond, and blue-eyed, Tim is hot and hard not to notice—especially since Scott and Tim work together. Too bad the man is straight, and too bad Scott worries how Paul will react if Scott hooks up with his best friend.

Tim and Scott want to see if there’s a chance for more than friendship between them, but neither of them wants to lose Paul. Together, they must find the courage to follow their hearts and find a way to have it all.

Excerpt:
Tim followed Scott down the long hotel corridor. The patterned carpet and beige-toned walls seemed to extend forever as they passed door after door. Tim’s nervousness grew with each step, his chest getting tighter and tighter with each room they passed. By the time they reached the last door, he was almost light-headed with anticipation.
Tim stopped directly behind Scott and waited anxiously as Scott pulled the key card from the back pocket of his jeans. Scott slid the card into the reader on the wall and the door unlocked with a soft snick before he pushed it open. Tim stood at the threshold, reluctant to follow Scott into the room. He knew that once he took the next step, there would be no going back. Whatever happened from now on, it had the potential to alter the course of his future forever.
He was either about to make the biggest mistake of his life, or take a gamble that would pay off tenfold.

Book Blurb

Bartender-extraordinaire Amy Thompson loves her job at Sappho’s Kiss, but grows weary of the party lifestyle she lives. A decade has passed since she’d taken her life into her own hands and said enough was enough. That didn’t mean a lifetime of programming changed overnight and concealing her pain from others was a habit she held to with a steely, white-knuckled grip. That is until she caught sight of big, azure eyes across a coffee shop.

Psychologist Maya Chamberlain tells herself she's content with her life since she was widowed years before. The same crash that took her husband left her with a limp and a loathed cane. She loves her job at the LGBT Youth Center in Colton, Maine’s Pride District until an over-sized, blonde ego plops down across from her in Pink’s Diner.

Can two women who hide what they desire from the rest of the world find freedom and acceptance in each other’s arms?

Excerpt

Maya glanced around the meticulously neat apartment, nothing out of place. The smoky, sweet scent of incense teased her nose. She sank onto the soft, tan suede couch and sighed in relief. The pressure eased in her hip and thigh.

“You can stay and rest, then I’ll call you a cab, or did you drive?”

“I took a cab. I don’t drive. I need to tell you something.”

“Don’t worry about it. You took the news better than some.”

When Amy seemed ready to continue, Maya spoke up, cutting her off. “Shut up. Let me say this before I lose my nerve.” Amy’s honey blonde brow rose and Maya swore she almost smiled. “I was married for several years, two rich families combining and it was very business-like almost something from the Middle Ages. I played the part of the perfect wife and socialite. On the Board of all the right charities and had the right friends. Stepford Wife, but everything wasn’t so perfect. After our first anniversary he hit—” She paused as a sob threatened. “—hit me for the first time.

“Charles never left marks, at least none anyone could see. I won’t go into detail. I’m sure you can picture it clearly enough yourself. I’m sorry, you don’t look like a man—you’re not a man—but fear is irrational. I’m incredibly sorry I let it get the better of me. I wanted to make sure you knew it was my fear, my memories, not who you are. You may be a lot of things, and annoying is very much one of them, but mean-spirited isn’t.”

She noticed Amy remained silent for her small speech and realized she hadn’t looked at the woman the whole time. Turning her head, the anger in Amy’s eyes took her breath. “Are you divorced?”

“No, he died in a car accident. It’s where I hurt my hip.”

“C’mere.”

“What?” Her eyes widened when the woman patted her lap for Maya to sit. “Oh no, I don’t need a hug or anything.”

“Who said anything about a hug? C’mere.” Maya swallowed around the nervous lump in her throat and scooted over a few inches, stopped, and turned back to find deep blue eyes staring at her with a raised brow. Moving carefully, she lifted and settled herself on Amy’s lap.

“Um, if you’re not going to hug me, what are you going to do?”

“This.” Amy’s slender hands—the slight calluses surprised her—cupped her cheeks and turned her head. Her only warning was a fan of breath across her mouth before Amy brought their lips together. It was a gentle kiss, unhurried, no hardness or anger. Her chest tightened and her lips tingled. On instinct, she brought her arms up to drape over the bigger woman’s shoulders.

The angle of the kiss changed, the tip of Amy’s tongue teased the crease of her lips and an unexpected sigh parted her them, allowing the gentle probing. She didn’t understand what was happening, but she melted into the long, slender body, her breasts pressed to Amy’s. The deep moan against her lips startled her and had her pulling away.

“Easy. Come back here. I’m going to enjoy this kiss until you come back to your senses.”
She let herself lean back against Amy, and coming to her senses was the last thing on her mind. Not during the first kiss or the ones that followed. They were all soft, a taste here, a nip there, and a gentle suck to her bottom lip, then top. Amy never pushed for more, and somewhere in the back of her mind, she wanted Amy to push, but she settled for the gentle sips from her mouth. It was perfect.
